How to Get Blood Out of Clothes
The most important rule for all fabrics is: Always use cold water. Hot water cooks the protein in blood, setting the stain permanently into the fibers.
👖Study Fabrics (Jeans, Cotton T-Shirts, Hoodies)
These fabrics are tough and can handle simple scrubbing.
- The Method: Flush the back of the stain with cold running water to push the blood out. Apply a few drops of liquid dish soap or heavy-duty laundry detergent directly onto the spot.
- The Action: Rub the fabric against itself gently to work up a lather, then rinse with cold water.
- Alternative: For stubborn spots on jeans or backpacks, dab the stain with hydrogen peroxide using a cotton ball. Watch it bubble up, then rinse it out immediately. (Note: Peroxide can slightly fade dark colors, so test a hidden spot first).
👔Delicate Fabrics (Silk Blouses, Wool Sweaters)
Delicate fibers will break or warp if you scrub them hard.
- The Method: Mix 1 teaspoon of dish soap into a bowl of cold water.
- The Action: Dip a clean white cloth into the soapy water and gently blot (press down repeatedly) onto the stain. Never rub or use a harsh brush.
- Alternative: If the stain is dry, mix a little bit of unflavored meat tenderizer powder with cold water to make a paste. Dab it onto the stain for 15 minutes. The enzymes in the powder break down the blood proteins without hurting the wool or silk. Rinse thoroughly with cold water.
🧦White Clothes & Undergarments
White clothing requires extra care to avoid leaving a faint yellow or brown shadow.
- The Method: Soak the garment in a sink filled with cold water and half a cup of white vinegar for 30 minutes.
- The Action: Rinse with cold water, then apply a paste made of baking soda and cold water directly onto any remaining shadow. Let it sit for 15 minutes before washing.
- Warning: Avoid using chlorine bleach on blood stains. The chemical reaction can actually turn the stain permanently yellow.
⚠️ The Final Golden Rule
Check before drying! Look closely at the clothing after it comes out of the washing machine. If you can still see a shadow of the stain, do not put it in the clothes dryer. The high heat of the dryer will bake the stain into the fabric forever. If the stain is still there, repeat the cleaning steps while it is still wet.
